Blackfish analysis
Blackfish documentary

The documentary from my perspective had the following conventions; stock/archival footage, montage, interviews, actuality footage and others. Regarding the modes the documentary was filled with music that ranged from happy to sad. It gave off the emotion of grief felt by the former divers shown by remorse and slight aggression over the company sea world.
The theme of the documentary is very clear as he beginning seems dark, unexpected as we are listening to a radio call about someone that has been killed by an orca at sea world. This sombre tone can be felt throughout the documentary through reminiscing on the past divers and how the whales themselves are treated. As the documentary focusses on how the whales are treated at times it makes you feel sympathy towards the whales and the divers. It does this to direct the fault on SeaWorlds side. Talikum is always spoke about in a way to sympathise with him and feel as if she is not to blame for the way he acts to divers. The blame is held in the hands of the SeaWorld's directors and people higher up who control the capturing of orcas. This is where the documentary is striking the audience with emotion as we are seeing a young being stripped from their mother and we begin to create a strong connection to the whale.
The use of interviews are prominent throughout the documentary as they are the interviewees are the ones who are conveying the information to us and are paired with images and stock footage as well as actuality footage to push the point across more. Firstly the interviewees were former SeaWorld divers so they had a lot of information and were able to relate the most with the treating of the whales and working with them. As they are a reliable source as an audience we are assuming that what they are saying is factual information.
