Modes of Documentary

Modes of documentary Poetic mode Considered a 'subjective interpretation of the subject' this mode will convey information in one mood or tone so it will be taken by the viewers in a single manor. Also usually key characteristics and moments of a person or topic are left out to create bias. Expository mode In this mode the narrator speaks directly to the audience usually through voice-over, subtitles. This creates a powerful point of view as the person speaking has a an overlook making them seem more significant, god like. Images are a main source to use as the narrator can use them to back his point and reinforce what he is saying. Observational mode In this mode the documentary filmmaker's engagement with the day to day life of the topic will be emphasised with an unobtrusive camera. It allowed me to focus on the modes and conventions while I was watching it. Overall, the purpose of the documentary in my eyes, is to shine light into the life of basketball player Kevin Durant during times when he wasn't playing basketball professionally in the league. We are able to see the business side of his life as well as how the media affects him negatively and positively. For example when he decides not to play for the US team during the off-season, he finds that media outlets begin to criticise him for being too 'lazy' and 'not passionate' for the game.
