Modes of documentary

Poetic mode

Considered a 'subjective interpretation of the subject' this mode will convey information in one mood or tone so it will be taken by the viewers in a single manor. Also usually key characteristics and moments of a person or topic are left out to create bias.

Expository mode

In this mode the narrator speaks directly to the audience usually through voice-over, subtitles. This creates a powerful point of view as the person speaking has a an overlook making them seem more significant, god like. Images are a main source to use as the narrator can use them to back his point and reinforce what he is saying.

Observational mode

In this mode the documentary filmmaker's engagement with the day to day life of the topic will be emphasised with an unobtrusive camera. Usually they will show a more unbiased point as they are letting the events unfold with no interference. This creates a strong bond with the viewer and the topic/people as the events are being witnessed along with the director.

Participatory mode

The use of having the director interfere and having a level of influence on the footage and facts. It shows clear evidence on the behalf of the director effecting events. The incorporation of this leads to a lot of bias as the creation of artificial events means the director has full control of how they are shown.

Reflexive mode

This mode causes the audience to have a certain final outcome, providing their opinions for them. The sense of realism isn't prominent with the use of re-constructed scenarios so it emphasises the point being made by the documentary. The events shown may be high case events but the audience is un-aware but it is found normal by the audience. By having an extreme suggestion towards a point it makes it very successful.

Performative mode

It will engage the viewer in a story but will expose them to factual points during the process. It will show the experiences of the film director and will be very deep and personal to them. Often used to show a story of a film maker from specific niche social groups.

Encompassing all modes I believe the most interesting

    Your definitions of the modes are well explained, Liam. I would like you to add to this section, by recalling the presentations you did on the different modes with examples of each (with explainiation of why it is that particular mode (i.e. does it use voice of god? if so what mode does that make it?) and the affect they have on the viewer.

Blackfish documentary The documentary from my perspective had the following conventions; stock/archival footage, montage, interviews, actuality footage and others. Regarding the modes the documentary was filled with music that ranged from happy to sad. It gave off the emotion of grief felt by the former divers shown by remorse and slight aggression over the company sea world. The theme of the documentary is very clear as he beginning seems dark, unexpected as we are listening to a radio call about someone that has been killed by an orca at sea world. Bowling for Columbine analysis The documentary starts with upbeat, joyful music but the narrative hints satire with one of his comment. Michael Moore throughout the documentary makes remarks to mock America and how it functions as a country. The comedic sense if firstly introduced in the first piece of actuality footage where Michael visits a bank where when you make an account you receive a free gun along with it. It screams to the audience the accessibility and ease to obtain a rifle. This is presented in a comedic fashion by Michael the way he talks to the bank employees and how he walks out of the bank holding it, almost as if its a joke. The comedic nature of America's gun law is kept throughout with the use of sarcasm during the voice-over and when interviewing people. Kevin Durant The Offseason The documentary -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE8-zjpI2W0 As I've always had an interest in basketball and I thought watching a documentary that I had a lot of knowledge about previously, would be beneficial. It allowed me to focus on the modes and conventions while I was watching it. Overall, the purpose of the documentary in my eyes, is to shine light into the life of basketball player Kevin Durant during times when he wasn't playing basketball professionally in the league. We are able to see the business side of his life as well as how the media affects him negatively and positively. For example when he decides not to play for the US team during the off-season, he finds that media outlets begin to criticise him for being too 'lazy' and 'not passionate' for the game.
