Kevin Durant The Offseason Documentary analysis
Kevin Durant The Offseason
As I've always had an interest in basketball and I thought watching a documentary that I had a lot of knowledge about previously, would be beneficial. It allowed me to focus on the modes and conventions while I was watching it.
Overall, the purpose of the documentary in my eyes, is to shine light into the life of basketball player Kevin Durant during times when he wasn't playing basketball professionally in the league. We are able to see the business side of his life as well as how the media affects him negatively and positively. For example when he decides not to play for the US team during the off-season, he finds that media outlets begin to criticise him for being too 'lazy' and 'not passionate' for the game. We begin to build a strong connection to him as a day to day human being as we are shown the struggles of media pressure and business pressure while having to maintain a career for 2/3 of the year.
Interviews are used to strengthen this bond we as a viewer have with Kevin Durant. The interviews consist of mainly people who Kevin has had in his life for years upon years. They tell us about his grind and grit always working to be better but how its never shown to the public. We are shown as an audience that all the media wants is for him to improve even when he is trying to reach this prime. He is almost forced into trying to become better when he knows himself that he can't perform with perfection unless he takes time away to practice.
Throughout the documentary we are given no archival footage. The reason I believe it wasn't included was because the main focus was Kevin Durant and the time that he spends away from the league. The archival footage would only show him during his years playing at college or when he was a rookie in the league. However, they decided not to to focus on this as it would draw away the attention from Kevin and his lifestyle away from the competitive nature of the sport.
The documentary does though include a lot of actuality footage showing him during practice and spending time with friends. It allows us to see Kevin in the present implying that he is evolving as a person and a player.
I believe that this documentary was made in an observational mode as we are watching Kevin Durant singularly and are not being taken away from him with the director or any reconstructed scenarios.
